April 25, 2004 (Wheaton, IL) Small business owners in DuPage county
are hiring but hiring reluctantly, a new survey by GrowingCo, Inc.
shows.
Roughly one in five consulting and technology business employers
plan to add workers or additional contractors in the second quarter
of the year to keep pace with increased demand for their products
or services, according to a survey of 78 businesses by GrowingCo.
"Job hunters should focus on small and medium sized businesses,”
said Ben Bradley, GrowingCo’s managing director. "The
job market is picking up. Current staffing at small and medium sized
businesses is stretched too thin. There is a genuine need to add
capacity to keep up with demand.”
The survey found 20 percent of companies expect to hire more people
in the second quarter, while 6 percent intend to cut jobs. The rest
anticipate no change or are uncertain about hiring prospects in
the second half of 2004.
The number of companies expecting to hire has increased substantially
since last year. Most employers report improved staffing projections
compared to the previous year. A growing share of companies also
plan to invest in equipment, buildings and vehicles over the next
year.
“The reality is most small companies have slashed to the bone
and improved productivity as much as they can. Eventually you’ve
got to grow,” Bradley said.
