All networks scanned during course of study
were vulnerable at some level
Chicago, May 3, 2004 -- A study of banks with less than $500million
in assets conducted by GrowingCo, Inc. revealed that bank CEOs are
not as secure as they think they are.
The study, a rapid sampling of 100 banks during the months of February
and March, uncovered additional surprising results about network
security perceptions.
This study was not meant to be statistically meaningful, instead
it merely serves as a quick snap shot of the behavior of 100 banks.
During initial assessments, when asked about the current state
of their network security, 85% of CEOs said, “we have everything
covered.”
Follow-up assessments revealed the following:
- 100% of the networks scanned were vulnerable at some level.
- More than 50% of the firewalls were mis-configured in some
way.
- 90% of the border routers were mis-configured.
- 100% of the networks analyzed showed evidence of virus attack.
What does this mean for bank CEOs? According to GrowingCo’s
Managing Director, Ben Bradley, “It means we over-estimate
our own security and under-estimate the intelligence of our attackers.
That is not a good thing."
